Dear Parents,

This week we have two celebrations that will be observed by families in our community. Many Coventry families take part in celebrating Halloween and many students will be out trick or treating in the evening.  At school, students are invited to dress up in costumes for the day. No masks, weapons or face coverings are permitted. We ask that students keep their costume accessories at home, so they don’t get left at school by accident. Students can wear light makeup for the day, but we ask parents to refrain from full face paint as it is a long day for the students to be wearing it and it will need to be touched up anyway for the evening.  Have extra clothing in your child’s backpacks in case they want to change out of their costume during the day. Classes may engage in learning activities related to Halloween. Refer to your child’s Google classroom for specific information. With Halloween comes the eating of “sweets”.  It is important for parents to continue to send healthy snacks for recess and lunch to support focus in learning.

The second celebration many of our community members will be participating in is Diwali which is the Hindu festival of lights. Diwali projects the rich and glorious past and teaches it observers to uphold the true values of life.  The significance of Diwali is light over darkness and good over evil. To our families who are observing this important cultural celebration, we wish you a wonderful celebration.

During our Professional Development Day last Friday, staff examined student achievement and perception data to determine our focus for our School Development Plan for the next three years.  We are making a commitment to increase student achievement regarding writing and mathematics. More information will be shared at our School Council meeting and in late November  the School Development Plan will be posted on our school website.

Traffic and City Bylaw Update:

Just a reminder for parents who are dropping their children off in the middle of the road to please use HugNGo service in front of the school on Coventry Hills Way.  By stopping in the middle of the road, cars are holding up the traffic flow as well as creating unsafe conditions for children who are exiting out of their vehicles.  Our HugNGo area is a safe area where parents can pull up curbside and drop off children without having to park your car or jaywalk across the streets with your child. There is a spot waiting for you and an adult who is close by to supervise students as they exit vehicles and walk onto the school grounds.

Also, just a friendly reminder that the City of Calgary has a bylaw that states, “Dogs are not allowed in school grounds, playgrounds, sport fields... etc.”   We ask that families keep their dogs off Coventry Hills School grounds unless they are a service dog in which you notify the school administration, and the dog wears their service vest that clearly indicates to others that they are currently working.  This will also signal that the dog is working and students will not approach the dog. We invite families who are walking their dogs to stay on the public sidewalk on the periphery of our school grounds and your child(ren) can walk across grounds independently.

We will be hosting our Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday, November 7th at 10:30 am.  This assembly is open to parents to join us.
