Dear Coventry Hills Families,

At the beginning of this month, parents received information from CBE Connections regarding Administrative Regulation 5002, which outlines the important roles and responsibilities of parents as valued stakeholders within the Calgary Board of Education. This regulation highlights the importance of respectful and collaborative communication between families and school staff. We encourage all parents to take a few moments to review the behavioural expectations outlined in the regulation when engaging with school staff. In addition,  these expectations are displayed on signs posted throughout our school in public areas. We appreciate your ongoing partnership in helping to maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment for all members of our school community.

Halloween Celebrations

This Friday, we will be celebrating Halloween at Coventry Hills School. Students are welcome to wear Halloween costumes to school for the day. We kindly ask that all costumes be appropriate for the school setting and be respectful of the fact that not all families celebrate or recognize this North American cultural tradition.

To support a positive learning environment, we ask that students do not bring face masks, full-face paint, props, or costume accessories to school. These items can become distractions during learning, may be misplaced, and can sometimes create safety concerns. If a costume includes face paint, we ask that it be applied lightly around the eyes and cheeks only. Please note that classes will continue with regular learning activities throughout the day. Additional information about classroom-specific activities will be shared through your child’s Google Classroom. In addition, we kindly ask that students keep their candy at home and continue to bring healthy snacks that will support them to be focused for learning.  Sugary snacks may be sent back home to enjoy there.

Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Results

This week, parents will receive an email from CBE Communications regarding your child’s Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Assessment results. A copy of your child's results will be sent home in a sealed white envelope with the students on Wednesday, October 29.  If you do not recieve the envelope reach out directly to your child's teacher.

We encourage parents to review the information provided in the CBE email, including guidance on how to interpret these results. It is important to remember that these assessments provide a snapshot of student learning at a specific point in time and are intended to help inform instruction and identify next steps for individual learners.

Many components of the numeracy assessment involve timed activities ranging from 30 seconds to one minute. While the assessment materials themselves cannot be shared with families, teachers will be discussing student results for students at risk and next steps during parent-teacher conferences in November.  The information provided the email from CBE also includes resources to support your child’s continued growth in reading and mathematics at home.

Traffic and Student Safety

Last week, members of the Calgary Police Service and City of Calgary Bylaw Services visited our school community to observe ongoing traffic concerns during student drop-off times. During their observations, officers witnessed several traffic violations, including U-turns, students being dropped off in the middle of the road, vehicles stopping or parking in areas that obstruct pedestrian crossings, and vehicles parking in designated loading zones. Some drivers may have received tickets for these infractions. The safety of our students, families, and staff remains a top priority. We ask all drivers to follow posted traffic regulations and to park in zones that allow more than 10 minutes and do not block our neighbors’ garages or driveways. Thank you for helping to keep our school community safe.

School Council Movie Night

A heartfelt thank you to our School Council and CHEFs for hosting this year’s annual Movie Night and the countless volunteers it takes to put on such an event.  The event was a tremendous success, with an excellent turnout and a wonderful sense of community. We would also like to thank the many parents and family members who helped with cleanup after the event made it easier for our volunteers and custodial staff to get the school gym ready for the next day.  Your support and generosity are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Coventry Hills School.

Sincerely

Benita Dalton, Principal
