Principal’s Message January 29h

Dear Parents,

Happy Chinese New Year (Gong Xi Fa Cai!) to all our families who are participating in this wonderful celebration. Chinese New Year marks the transition from winter to spring and symbolizes new beginnings. This year is the year of the snake. Chinese communities, in China and elsewhere, largely consider it to be the most important festival of the year.

Reminder that student report cards were made available to parents on Monday, January 27th. They can be accessed through our school website and the MyCBE link.  Please take the time to read and celebrate your child’s learning. Report card comments are written for Literacy and Math each team with areas of strengths and areas of growth. According to research, children whose families are engaged in their education are more likely to have better attendance and behavior, get better grades, demonstrate better social skills and adapt better to school. If you have any questions regarding your child’s learning, please reach out to your child’s teacher directly to set up an appointment to discuss.

We had a good kick off for Literacy Week this week and we had special guest readers come into the classroom to share a book related to this year’s literacy theme of “Learning to Be Green.”  On Monday, students brought home information related to our school Read-athon.  Thank you to School Council for organizing this event.  All proceeds of our school Read-athon go towards our new school playground!  Throughout this week, we are having ‘drop everything and read’ sessions for 10-15 minutes.  For more information, please look for the handout sent home with your child on Monday. In addition, information was also sent out by School Council/CHEF’s.  Information will also be uploaded on our school website later this week. A reminder to sign up to come and read with your child in their classroom tomorrow at 2:45 pm.

Thank you to all the wonderful parents who took the time out of their busy lives and supported our casino fundraising by volunteering this Monday and Tuesday. This fundraising event provides our school with monies to purchase additional student resources, supplement fieldtrips by reducing the cost of bussing, technology such as smartboards, and a large portion will be going towards our playground as we look to raise approximately $600,000 over the next two years. This fundraiser provides up to $70,000 with just a short 48 hours of service. We could not do this without the support of our parent group. We continue to need more volunteers to continue to support our school-based community efforts. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Nadine Guard at coventryhillschair@gmail.com.

This Friday, there is no school for our students. Teachers will be working with an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper; William Singer and we will be going over the Nose Creek area and learning the stories of the land and the importance of water shed from an Indigenous perspective. Thank you to CHEFS for sponsoring this work as it is the beginning phase. Soon, teachers will be planning with William a field trip experience where the students will have opportunities to learn the stories from the Indigenous Knowledge keeper about the importance of water and preserving the natural plants that is close to the community in which they live.

Sincerely,

Benita Dalton, Principal
